Katayoun Alidadi joined Bryant University in 2017 as an Assistant Professor of Legal Studies specializing in comparative law, human rights and the intersections of law and religion. She has written extensively on these topics, as well as on conflict of laws and employment law. Prior to entering academia, she was a practicing attorney, first with an international law firm in Brussels and later practicing public interest and small business law in Los Angeles with Public Counsel Law Center. She holds a PhD in law from the KULeuven (Leuven, Belgium) and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School (Cambridge, MA, USA). In her doctoral thesis, she compared the legal treatment of religious symbols and practices in employment relations and unemployment benefits litigation in both Europe and North America. She has won a number of research and writing awards, including the 2013 Ius Commune Prize for her research on reasonable accommodation for religion and belief and the Addison Brown Prize at Harvard Law School for her paper on the recognition of Islamic talaq (divorce) in Western jurisdictions. Before joining Bryant University, she taught conflict of laws at the University of Houston Law Center and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle/Saale, Germany). Dr. Alidadi is affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology as a Research Partner and has worked with public and private organizations on religious accommodation best practices in the workplace. She is the author of Religion, Equality and Employment in Europe: the Case for Reasonable Accommodation (Hart, 2017). She is also co-editor of three scholarly volumes: A Test of Faith? Religious diversity and accommodation in the European workplace (Ashgate, 2012); Belief, Law and Politics. What Future for a Secular Europe?
